What is Steampunk Fashion?
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and is associated with the Victorian times, when steam power was widely used. This period of time saw the development of many key aspects of the modern world and Steampunk fiction basically uses the steam powered technology from this time to imagine a more advanced 19th century, where there are such things as steam powered aircraft and steam powered computers.
Steampunk has existed since the 19th century, with some of the earliest authors of Steampunk works being Jules Verne and H.G Wells; however the term was not actually coined until the late 1980s.
So how does this relate to Steampunk fashion?
Steampunk fashion is basically a real-word production of the clothing that can be found in Steampunk novels and literature. Steampunk outfits are usually made up of pieces that were typically worn in the Victorian era such as bustles, corsets, petticoats, waistcoats and top hats and there is also usually a presence of technological accessories such as timepieces, parasols and goggles.
It is common for Steampunk dresses to incorporate modern accessories like mobile phones and mp3 players into their outfits, though they have usually been modified to give them a Victorian-edge. Remember in Steampunk literature, these devices may have existed, just not as we know them today. In Steampunk literature these devices would have been powered by steam, so that is why Steampunk fans would modify them as such.
Fashion experts are predicting that Steampunk is going to be the next big thing to really take hold of the retail industry. Some top fashion designers including Prada, Chanel and Christian Dior have already introduced Steampunk-inspired collections to the runway.
Women’s Steampunk fashion
As we said before, the Steampunk fashion trend is largely made up of clothing that was worn in Victorian times. For example, women who want to dress Steampunk may wear petticoats, corsets and some sort of headwear like a mini top hat or a floral pin. Some Steampunk ladies choose to go for a more androgynous look, instead dressing as pilots or engineers, this also blends very well into the Dieselpunk world. (see our blog on DieselPunk for more)
Men’s Steampunk fashion
Steampunk men will often be seen wearing suits, top hats and long, straight coats, typical of the Victorian era. However others may choose to wear pilot-style outfits made up of leather boots, gloves and goggles instead.
A common accessory in Steampunk fashion is the pocket watch and is worn by both genders. If you think about it, in Steampunk literature (set in Victorian times) the wristwatch would not exist, making a pocket watch a great alternative. Other common accessories include parasols (usually used by women) and goggles, which would look amazing with any steampunk outfit.
Although Steampunk outfits often come in black, brown and white, there are no colours that are specific to the trend. Experts on the genre say that seeing as though Steampunk is set in a world where advanced technology exists, it is perfectly acceptable to incorporate colourful items and even patterned clothing into your Steampunk outfits.
One of the reasons why Steampunk fashion is rising in popularity is likely to be down to its diversity and the fact it has something to offer just about everyone. It is also another form of vintage-style fashion, which has been at the forefront of the style trends for the last few years.
Steampunk fashion is all about tailoring clothing to the individual, embracing quirkiness and expressing personality. What’s not to love?
